Output is WebM (VP9/VP8), which plays in all modern browsers. Re-encoding runs in real time — a 60-second clip takes about 60 seconds.

Big videos, small files

Phone cameras now record 4K at 400 MB per minute — great for editing, terrible for WhatsApp, email or a slow upload. DesignMode24‘s video compressor re-encodes your clips at a bitrate and resolution you choose, turning an unshareable monster into a file that actually sends.

How the video compressor works

  1. Drop your video in. MP4, WebM, MOV and friends. It loads locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded anywhere.
  2. Pick a bitrate and resolution. 1 Mbps at half resolution is the balanced default: a 1080p clip becomes a crisp 540p file roughly 10x smaller. Go lower for messaging apps, higher for YouTube.
  3. Compress. The tool re-encodes frame-by-frame in real time, mixing your original audio back in. Keep the tab open — a 60-second clip takes about 60 seconds.
  4. Preview and download. Watch the result, check the before/after sizes, then save the WebM file.

What the settings actually do

  • Bitrate controls quality per second. Halving the bitrate roughly halves the file — 5 Mbps looks near-original, 1 Mbps looks good on phones, 0.5 Mbps is “send it now” territory.
  • Resolution controls pixel dimensions. Dropping 1080p to 540p quarters the pixels the encoder must describe, which multiplies your savings.
  • Output format is WebM (VP9/VP8) — playable in every modern browser and most phones. If you need MP4 specifically, use it as an intermediate and convert once.

Honest expectations

Re-encoding is lossy: extreme settings will look soft. The trick is matching the output to its destination — a video destined for a phone screen doesn’t need 4K. Start with the defaults, preview the result, and only push further if the file is still too big. Your original is never modified, so experimenting is free.

Frequently asked questions

Does it keep the audio?
Yes — the original audio track is mixed back into the compressed file.

Why real time?
Browsers encode by playing the video through a capture pipeline. It’s the price of total privacy: your footage never leaves your device.

What’s the biggest file I can compress?
It depends on your device’s memory. Clips up to a few hundred MB work well; feature-length 4K is a job for desktop software.

Is it free?
Yes — no account, no watermark, no limits.
